Dyson Pure Cool TP04 Review

Editor’s rating: 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)

The Dyson TP04 is a 3-in-1 deal that’s worth a look. First, it’s a sensor. It quantifies the air pollution in the room and calculates a detailed air quality report for you. Second, the TP04 is a portable room air cleaner. If the air quality is bad, the machine automatically roars into action and starts purifying the air.

Third, the thing is a fan. The air purifier-fan combo pushes out a soft breeze of clean air that cools you as you listen to some soothing music. To accomplish that, it leverages Dyson’s famous Air Multiplier Technology.

One more thing. The Dyson TP04 is Amazon enabled. You can actually talk to it. It’s also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, a smart choice.  And the unit looks cute. You won’t ever want to “hide it.” It subtly tells visitors that you value the coolest things in life.

With the TP04, the allergy season ceases to be such a terrifying prospect. And the tobacco or marijuana smoke that wafts from your neighbor’s apartment bothers you much less.

But is this air purifier a good buy? Read this Dyson Pure Cool TP04 Review and find out if the device is really as great as you’ve heard.

Is the Dyson TP04 the Best Air Purifier?

Dyson Pure Cool, TP04 – HEPA Air Purifier and Tower Fan, White/Silver

I don’t know.

How could anyone ever measure that, seriously?

Well, lots of people have conducted numerous tests to measure the potency of air purifiers. But in the end, you mainly want to hear what real users of a product think about it.

But I can confidently say this: my TP04 wasn’t money poured down the drain.

My Dyson  sits in my son’s rather small bedroom (13 X 12 feet). And if he doesn’t sleep like a log every night, it’s not because the air purifier is producing too much noise.

Since we bought this Dyson, spring has ceased to be such a dreadful prospect.

Setting Up the Dyson TP04

Setting my Dyson up was super easy. The device’s filter comprises two main parts. Further, each part contains two key components.

The first component is an outer HEPA filter designed to suck in relatively large particulate matter. On the inner side of this filter is an activated carbon filter. Dyson says that the carbon filter has the ability to filter out much smaller particles. And that includes molecules from odors and fumes.

I simply took the device out of the box and assembled it within minutes. It was a matter of clicking into place the two main parts around my fan’s base.

Then, I snapped the covers on the filters. The pieces fit perfectly. Finally, I sat the product on the floor of my bedroom, plugged it in, and fired it up. It’s that easy and fast.

But Does Dyson Pure TP04 Really Work?

The straightforward answer is that it does.

I have evidence that the Dyson I bought wasn’t money flushed down the drain.

First, I have real-time graphs and other data on my Dyson Link app that proclaim the product’s potency. Second, I have what I’ll call “anecdotal evidence.”

I mean, I have consistently slept better ever since I bought my Dyson. I’m not asthmatic, though. But I’m still seeing great benefits.

And I’m not the only one.

My son keeps telling me how much he loves his Dyson.

He’s 14 as of this writing. And he’s a lovely little boy. Sadly, he’s asthmatic.

Before I bought a Dyson for my son as a birthday gift mid-2018, his life was awful. He’d sneeze and wheeze so bad especially around springtime. Of course, he took meds. But they weren’t doing much good for him.

At some point, his symptoms deteriorated so bad I thought we’d lose him. I honestly can’t say his Dyson air purifier saved him. But it sure did help.

My Son’s Asthma Symptoms Have Improved

Frankly, I’ve not evaluated this device’s efficacy using scientific methods. But judging from what I’ve seen and the reports I’m getting, I’d say the Dyson Pure Cool TP04 air purifier works.

Well, my son still sneezes and coughs when spring comes round. However, his symptoms no longer subdue him.

My boy may not care much about the numbers displayed on his device’s LCD screen. All that matters to him is that breathing has stopped being such an unpleasant experience. Thanks to the Dyson TP04, my son breathes easier and sleeps much better.

Asthma and Allergy Certified

All Dyson air purifiers have been tested and proven capable of helping asthma and allergy sufferers.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America agrees that this device, and all Dyson purifiers, are great for improving asthma and allergy symptoms.

Unboxing the Dyson TP04 Air Purifier

The Dyson TP04 air purifier features a slender, tall design. Do you agree that tall, slender people look stunning?

I didn’t know this was true of fans as well until I saw my Dyson. It’s easy on the eye. And it greatly enhances the overall look of your room pretty much like your lampshade does.

The Dyson TP04 is the kind of device visitors notice quickly upon entering your home. It says to all, “The person who owns me loves the finer things in life.”

Features and Benefits

Let’s consider each of the features I mentioned above one by one and see where that leaves us.

Weight: 10.98 Pounds — Light and Portable

While some parts may seem metallic, this device is pure plastic. At just 10.98 pounds, the unit is quite light.

As a result, the Dyson Pure Cool is pretty easy to move around. Due to its light weight and its rather tall design, knocking it over is easy. The product looks pretty delicate and flimsy. Better be careful as you walk around the house. The Dyson TP04 isn’t exactly cheap, remember.

But while the Dyson Pure Cool looks sort of like flimsy, it’s quite tough. Dyson’s engineers have subjected this device to quite a few rough tests.

And that includes dropping the product from different heights.

So, stop worrying about tipping your device over and damaging it. But you don’t want the air purifier to fall on your child.

Dyson Pure Cool’s HEPA Filter

The unit comes with a glass HEPA filter. According to Dyson, the HEPA filter removes 99.95% of particulate matter from your indoor air. Air purifiers that use True HEPA filters eliminate a slightly higher amount of particulate matter (99.97%).

With this fan-cum-air purifier, you’ll stop worrying about most PM10 particles including household dust, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander.

PM10 are course particles whose diameter ranges from 2.5 microns to 10 microns. Luckily, human lungs are able to deal with most PM10 particles. Your Dyson can easily handle the rest of these particles.

Dyson Pure Cool’s Activated Carbon Filter

But you still have PM2.5 to worry about. PM2.5 particles are fine particles with a diameter of 2.5 microns or smaller. These particles can enter the bloodstream and cause serious health issues.

Some of the possible health conditions include heart attacks, heart disease, asthma, decreased lung efficiency, lung irritation, difficulty breathing.

It gets worse.

Research reveals that PM2.5 causes premature death. Did you know air pollution kills 7,000,000+ humans each year? Blame PM2.5 for this terrifying state of affairs. Smoke and cooking gas molecules measure about 2.5 microns.

Dyson says that the Pure Cool Link air purifier can remove these harmful PM2.5  particles from indoor air. The company claims that the fan’s activated carbon filter can remove PM2.5 particles. These particles include household odors, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), and gaseous particles such as smoke.

But does the Dyson Pure air purifier eliminate PM2.5? Honestly, I don’t know. But I can say this: air purifiers aren’t designed to deal with gaseous particles. I’m not sure whether this device can help anyone deal with fumes from the kitchen or tobacco smoke.

However, many Dyson users from places with frequent wildfires keep touting this device for its highly effective smoke removal ability.

Airflow Reversal

This purifier-fan normally releases air through the front. That’s ok as long as it’s not wintertime.

One awesome feature about the Dyson TP04 is that it enables you to reverse airflow. Simply set the device to the backward air flow mode. The feature enables the device to clean your air without cooling you. Instead of cool air flowing out through the front, it leaves the device through the back.

That makes this product a great option for wintertime air purification.

Dyson TP04: Air Sensors

This Dyson comes with a set of air quality sensors. These sensors are remarkably accurate. Under the section “LCD Display,” we’ll discuss the various air pollution events these sensors help monitor.

When I crank up my Dyson, the sensors immediately kick into gear. They record air quality numbers throughout the time the device is running.

I’ve noted that when I open the door at night to go check on my son, PM 2.5 and PM10 particles shoot up. I’ve also noted that moving the lawn causes a movement in the air quality numbers. That shows just how sensitive the sensors really are.

Upon consulting the Dyson Link app, I can see what my machine has been doing. I can access detailed information about how VOCs and particulate matter levels in my room changed throughout the duration.

Maybe Dyson should consider IFTTT integration as that would make the device a lot more useful. Wouldn’t it be great if a decrease in a room’s humidity levels would automatically turn on your humidifier?

The Dyson Pure Cool TP04 Works Well with Alexa

The Dyson TP04 works efficiently with Amazon’s Alexa. This capability enables you to speak to your device. And that makes it easier and more convenient to use the device. The purifier-fan is also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled.

I’m yet to start using this technology (Amazon Alexa), though. I tried making it work but couldn’t. I guess that’s because I’m terrible when it comes to all things tech.

But from what I’ve gleaned while researching, you can use your mouth to do lots of stuff with Alexa. Want to adjust fan speed? Talk to your device. Want to switch to night mode? Simply tell it to do that.

You can also command your Dyson TP04  to turn itself on or off. Heck, you can even ask this technology to tell you about your room’s temperature or air quality.

Alexa Limitations with the Dyson TP04

However, this Alexa capability does have its limitations.

For example, you can’t control your fan’s oscillation using Alexa. Nor can you tell your air purifier to reverse the way air flows from your device. Maybe Dyson’s engineers will address the issue at some point.

Dyson Pure Cool’s Oscillation

This purifier-fan oscillates. It rotates through a wide range of oscillation angles. The fan comes with a button that helps you choose one of 4 oscillation angles. You can pick any of these four angles: 45°, 90°, 180°, and 350°.

Oscillation allows you to choose which area of your room to direct clean air. As the fan rotates, it mixes and circulates clean indoor air around the entire space.

Automatic Shutoff: Get Uninterrupted Sleep

My Dyson Pure Cool air purifier also features an auto shutoff. This capability enables you to plan when your fan should automatically turn off. I set my device to shut off after 6 hours every night.

The auto shutoff timer is a pretty cool feature.

I’m able to sleep without needing to wake up to turn off my machine.

10 Fan Speed Settings for Efficient Air Purification

How noisy or quiet is the Dyson TP04? I’ve never needed to go beyond setting 5. At this setting, the fan produces no more than 45 decibels. But the noise levels rose up to about 56 decibels on fan speed 10. Some people say that’s high.

Evidently, the air purifier is one of the quietest devices on the market today. And that makes it great for both home and office use.

Compare this air purifier to the Honeywell HPA300 air purifier which sits in my living room. A HPA300 running on the turbo mode (highest speed) can be quite loud.

Dyson’s Air Multiplier Technology Delivers Efficiency and Safety

Dyson’s Air Multiplier Technology enables our Dyson TP04 to circulate clean air across my son’s bedroom. The fan doesn’t use the usual fast-spinning blades that regular fans use.

Still, the fan manages to propel a powerful stream of unobstructed air across the room. Thanks to this technology, every corner of the room receives clean air (fast).

The device is safe to use for people with kids or pets. That’s because the fan is bladeless.

Intelligent Air Purification

Looking for a smart air purifier? Look no further than Dyson Pure Cool air purifier. Dyson Pure Cool automatically senses air pollution events.

When I set up the Dyson, I could immediately see how dirty my indoor air was. I ran the TP04 for about 50 minutes at a speed of 5.

The air quality in my son’s bedroom (13 X 12 inches) improved from fair to good. The product senses a room’s level of pollution and kicks into gear to “normalize” the situation.

Dyson Pure Cool’s LCD Display

The device comes with a small, simple LCD display located near the base. It generates real-time reports and graphs so you can learn what’s happening to your air quality.

The display uses different but easy-to-understand icons to represent various air quality parameters. I get no less than 6 air quality reports. Some people might say that’s too much information. And it is.

At a glance, I can see my son’s bedroom’s AQI (Air Quality Index). This measure indicates the room’s current air quality.

Another icon (a flower) shows the level of PM10 in the room. We’re talking pollen, dust, pet dander here— pollutants smaller than 10 microns and larger than 2.5 microns.

There’s also another icon (looks like the usual search icon) that reports on the room’s amount of PM2.5.

A different icon (a car) shows how much nitrogen dioxide there’s in the room. Candles, tobacco smoke, gas stoves and many other sources release NO2.

There’s yet another icon (a conical flask) that indicates VOCs levels. I recently performed a simple test to see what would happen to this parameter.

I sprayed some insecticide into my son’s bedroom. As you might expect, the VOCs spiked appreciably. That’s because the insecticide I used contained lots of particulate matter.

Fortunately, the Dyson Pure Cool TP04 brought the air quality back to pre-testing levels within 2 minutes. I’d say that’s super effective. This feature can help you decide whether you should swap to less harmful products.

The last icon is a double-layered filter. The feature helps you know when to replace either the activated carbon filter or the HEPA filter.

At night, the display dims so you can sleep peacefully. That makes this air purifier a great buy for light sleepers.

The Dyson TP04’s Link App

The Dyson TP04 is Wi-Fi enabled.

Thanks to Dyson’s Link app, I can access real-time air pollution reports for my son’s bedroom. Aside from that, the app allows remote control of the fan using my smartphone. Sure, data and messaging cost money. But you and I know it’s nothing the average consumer can’t afford.

The Dyson Link app would be particularly useful for someone with mobility issues. I like it that one can control the device from bed.

Note: Your smartphone or tablet needs to be Wi-Fi and app enabled. Additionally, your phone should have at least iOS version 10 or Android 5 to connect seamlessly.

Maybe some people see connection issues with their TP04 because their phone isn’t using a compatible operating system.

Purification Coverage

Dyson’s engineers have subjected the Dyson TP04 t0 countless tests to understand its effectiveness in air purification. They’ve concluded that the device works best for rooms not larger than 290 sq. ft. That’s about 17 X 17 sq. ft, which is a relatively large room.

Of course, you can use the device to clean smaller rooms. But if your room is quite small, it’s best to get a small room air purifier.

The Honeywell HPA100 True HEPA Allergen Remover 155 sq. ft.   is a great option for a medium-sized room. And it’s quite affordable.  However, it lacks quite a few great features that the Dyson TP04 offers.

Dyson Pure Cool’s Remote Controls

The Dyson Pure Cool air purifier features a small, sleek remote. I don’t use the remote. And I don’t worry about losing it.

That’s because the remote sits balanced atop the fan through magnetic force. You’ll most likely prefer to use the Dyson Link app. But there’s no harm in having this feature.

Enjoy a 2-year Warranty with Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifier

Dyson offers a 2-year warranty on labor and parts. Unfortunately, the warranty doesn’t include the filter.

Quite a few users have complained about this, but the company doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to address the issue.

Dyson and the rest of the world’s air purifier manufacturers make the largest chunk of their money from selling filters. So it’s easy to see why Dyson might continue dragging its heels on this concern.

Complaints from Owners of the Dyson TP04

The Dyson isn’t a Great Fan, But it Purifies Efficiently

As I researched for this Dyson Pure Cool TP04 review, I came across quite a few dissatisfied owners. The most common complaint was the device’s fan wasn’t any better than an ordinary fan.

In fact, one person felt that the purifier was nothing more than an overpriced fan!

As someone who shelled out hundreds of dollars for this device, I didn’t know what to feel about that claim. I’d bought the Dyson TP04 to use as a high-quality air cleaner, and I must say it delivers. But I’ll have to agree that the manufacturer should do something about the fan side’s effectiveness.

Device Lacks CADR Numbers

I also think Dyson should start providing CADR numbers. The device does a great job when it comes to telling me how polluted the room is, though.

The anecdotal evidence I’ve seen convinces me that I didn’t make a mistake.

Still, it’d be nice to provide CADR numbers like other manufacturers do. After all, consumers are often looking for air purifiers with a high CADR.

I can’t figure out why Dyson doesn’t submit its purifiers for CADR testing. Could it be that the device would show a significantly lower CADR than cheaper, comparable products? Who knows.

But there’s no doubt that TP04 works.

Dyson TP04 ACH

For some reason, Dyson doesn’t indicate the ACH for this and other purifiers.

ACH is a measure of how many times a purifier circulates air in a room within one hour. A device with an ACH of 5 circulates indoor air at least 5 times every hour.

I’d sure love to see future Dyson portable room cleaners that show this number.

Price is Steep

Honestly, I feel the price I paid for our Dyson TP04 was a little too high.

Software Glitches

I ‘ve also come across owners of this  Dyson who say they’ve seen a few software glitches with the device. Sometimes, they say the software takes forever to connect.

That can be quite annoying, I suppose. But I’d not say this issue affects the device’s performance regarding air purification.

Also, the app keeps reminding the user it needs a firmware update. Yet Dyson keeps saying  they’ve already done so. The app works satisfactorily, though.

Dyson Pure Cool TP04 Air Purifier: Final Thoughts

The Dyson Pure Cool TP04 is a great purifier. It does make my son’s bedroom a much happier, healthier place. But I’m not saying it should be everyone’s choice. I’m only saying I have no regrets. If I were to buy a brand new air purifier today, it’d still want a Dyson.

But I’d say the price feels steep. Sure, the device delivers real benefits to users. However, if I had to save money for months or even borrow to buy this purifier-fan, I’d probably consider a cheaper alternative. But if money isn’t an issue for you, the Dyson TP04 would doubtless be a great option. I’d sure love to see a much lower price for this device.

Also, Dyson’s engineer need to do something about the fan’s effectiveness.

Overall, I’d say the Dyson TP04 is a great product that deserves a chance from quality-conscious consumers. That’s why I’ve given this air purifier a rating of 4/5 : 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
