So everyone you know has been raving about Medify air purifiers, and you’ve decided to pull the trigger and buy either the monstrous Medify MA-112 or the cute and fab MA-40 air purifier. Editor’s Note*
Product descriptions on Amazon and the manufacturer’s site list these two purifiers using slightly different names. In those descriptions, it’s MA-112 V2.0 and MA-40 V2.0 rather than just Medify MA-112 and Medify MA-40.
The MA-40 V2.0 lacks the air quality monitoring feature (air quality sensor/air quality indicator) as well as the auto mode. It also lacks the blue light near the top panel that changes color as air quality changes. As for the MA-112, nothing has changed as far as I can see.
I also noticed that Medify now says that the new model (MA-112 V2.0) cleans up to 5,000 square feet vs 3,700 square feet for the older model. Surprisingly, the clean air delivery rate (CADR) remains the same, so I wonder where the added purification capability is coming from.
I imagine they took away those features (for the MA-40) to give users a model that focuses more on cleaning the air rather than on boasting of fancy features but not absolutely necessary features.
A few people have complained that the air quality monitor (with the old model) didn’t seem to work accurately for them. But performance and features-wise, there’s clearly no major difference between the new and old models.

The Medify MA-112 is a extra-large room True HEPA air purifier with H13 medical grade filters. These air filters amount to a 3-stage air purification mechanism that packs a really powerful punch.
And with a Clean Air Delivery of 950, you WON’T find any other portable room air purifier that offers as much air cleaning power. This machine is exceptional as far as ability to improve a room’s air quality.
The Touchscreen
This air purifier’s touchscreen panel doesn’t sit centrally as is the case with most purifiers. Instead, the 6-features on the control panel sits along one of the edges of the top cover. Pressing the control buttons and getting them to do your bidding is easy enough.
These touch buttons are quite responsive, which means you won’t need to keep applying force before you can activate the effect you want to see.
Replacement Filter Indicator
Other important features include the filter change indicator so you can swap out dirty air filters when the time comes. I love that the ozone generator is optional. You can choose to run it or not. I’ve seen air purifiers whose negative ion generator work the entire time, saturating the room with potentially harmful ozone. With such options, the unfortunate allergy sufferer has no option but to grin and bear it.
8-Hour Auto Shutoff Timer
Additionally, there’s an 8-hour programmable timer designed to shut down the air cleaning device after one of 4 intervals: 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours. I’d like to see a more generous timer, perhaps a 24-hour timer for added convenience, though.
4 Fan Speeds
4 fan speeds allow you to run the MA-112 at four different air cleaning levels. With this choice, you get to enjoy powerful 3-stage air filtration even at lower fan speed settings. And it’s not like the MA-112 roars like a small factory even on the highest fan speed setting.
Child-Lock and Night Mode
It gets better. The air cleaner features a child-lock feature that prevents pets and babies/toddlers from changing the settings.
Finally, the device offers the sleep mode/night mode, a feature that compels the air purification system to slow down and clean air at the lowest speed setting.
This monster may be ultra powerful, but its noise levels are tolerable. Surprisingly, the highest speed setting never produces more than 70 decibels.

Like its larger and more powerful sibling, the Medify MA-40 offers a child-lock, a change filter light, an 8-hour timer, and a night mode.
But unlike the MA-112, the control panel is anti-scratch. Made of tempered glass, the kind they use to make smartphone screens, this touch panel looks really nice. Also, the control features line up along the middle between one side of the unit and the opposite side.
I bought the MA-40 air purifier when it first came out. And the device had an air quality sensor, but the new model (MA-40 V2.0) doesn’t offer this feature. Nor does it have the blue light near the top of the touch screen as is the with the earlier version.
Medify MA-40 Vs Medify MA-112 Comparison: Similarities and Differences
There’s no major difference between the Medify MA-112 vs Medify MA-40 as far as product design and air purification mechanisms. They’re pretty similar as far as looks, and the features are similar, too.
One noteworthy difference the Medify MA-40 and MA-112 is that the MA-112 is designed to clean much larger spaces than the MA-40 does. Its cleaning power is roughly triple that of the MA-40. Also, its dimensions are larger, weighs more, and produces purified air faster than the MA-40.
Another key difference between the Medify MA-40 and Medify MA-112 is that the MA-112 features casters while the MA-40 doesn’t. The wheels stay hidden; a visitor won’t even know they’re there.
Note: if your floor isn’t smooth and even, you may have trouble rolling the MA-112 around the house.
The Medify MA-112 cleans much larger rooms because it comes armed with way more air filtration power for capturing pet dander, smoke, dust particles, dust mites, pollen, pet hair, and even VOCs such as formaldehyde.
Finally, the MA-112 is a little louder with the maximum noise levels hovering around 70 dB vs 66 dB for the MA-40. At the highest fan speed, both devices produce as much noise as the typical TV or radio. Both air purifiers offer 4 fan speeds.
Let’s now look at a few other aspects and see how the MA-112 V2.0 stacks up against the MA-40 V2.0
Dimensions and Product Weight
It’s hardly surprising that the MA-112 has larger dimensions than the MA-40. The MA-112 measures 15.4″D, 15.7″W, and 28.3H”, towering over its smaller sibling which measures 10.9D” x 9.9W” x 22H”. So, the MA-40 is the better bet for when you want a more compact, large room air purifier with true HEPA filters (H13).
Weight-wise, the MA-112 is heavier than the MA-40, weighing in at 33.5lbs vs 15.6lbs for the smaller purifier. The larger unit weighs two times the weight of the smaller device. I think it weighs more because it offers an extra set of filters (6 filters in total), plus its motor is larger, and it has casters.
Air Purifier Design
Both the MA-112 and MA-40 feature a rectangular design. For me, rectangular shapes look more appealing than circular ones. As far as design, neither option outshines the other, but the MA-40 is a step ahead in the looks department.
The MA-112 features two air inlets, one on the right side and the other on the left. Air gets in from two directions, passes via the really large air chamber, and exits via the top. As for the MA-40, the air gets in from one side, gets sanitized, and leaves via the other side as opposed to the top as is the case with its larger sibling.
Colors Options
The MA-40 is available in black and white while the MA-112 comes in white only. Here, the less powerful MA-40 wins. But both white and black are great colors that integrate quite well into whatever color scheme the user may have in the spaces they seek to purify.
Air Filtration Performance
Let’s now sink our teeth into the meatiest part of the Medify MA-112 vs 40 comparison: filtration performance. Air filtration performance is the most critical aspect to consider when comparing any two air purifiers.
With a CADR of 950, the MA-112 seriously outperforms the MA-40 whose clean air delivery rate stands at just 330.
In 1 hour, the larger air purifier circulates the air in the intended space (up to 5,000 square feet) and 2,500 sq.ft. in 30 minutes. And in 15 minutes, the MA-112 fills 1,250 square footage with pristine air that makes breathing a breeze. Now, that makes this purifier a real air cleaning champion.
By comparison, the Medify MA-40 filters air (1,600 square feet) in 1 hour, 840 square feet in 30 minutes, and 420 square feet in 15 minutes. To achieve 4 air changes every 60 minutes, you’d have to run the MA-112 in a room measuring 1,250 sq,. ft. vs 420 sq. ft. for the MA-40.
Evidently, the Medify MA-112 delivers about 3 times more air filtration power than the MA-40. So, if you intend to sanitize very large spaces such as basements, living rooms and kitchens, and master bedrooms, buy this extra-large room air purifier.

How many air changes per hour can you expect with each option? It depends on the dimensions of the room you plan on cleaning.
If the room measures 1,250 square feet, you’ll get 4 air changes every 60 minutes with the MA-112 versus 1.5 air exchanges with the MA-40 in the same room size. Clearly, the MA-112 would clean the same amount of space 3 times faster than its smaller, quieter air purifier. You realize that ACH isn’t a fixed number, right? It is not; it changes as room size does.
Where other air purifiers walk, both the MA-112 and 40 run, and where others run, these two fly! Small wonder their owners keep writing glowing reviews on Amazon and pretty much everywhere else online. Look, these air purifiers work….that’s a FACT.

How These Air Purifiers Work
Both Medifys draw dirty air laterally, remove contaminated particles from it, and distribute pure air back into the room. But while the MA-112 offers 360 degree clean air distribution, its smaller sibling exits purified indoor air via the front.
But the MA-112 air purifier offers double filtration thanks to its having two sets of air filters rather than one set as is the case with the MA-40.
With the MA-112, impure air enters the cleaning chamber from two directions as opposed to one, which means it disinfects the air much faster and more efficiently. With the MA-40, treated air re-enters via one side and exits via the other side, not the top as happens with the MA-112. Obviously, you won’t get 360 degree clean air dispersion with the MA40.
Auto Mode and Air Quality Indicator
The auto mode lets you operate an air purifier hassle-free. No need to adjust fan speed all the time. With this feature, just crank up the thing every time you’re jonesing for a breath-ful of squeaky clean air. Next, press the auto mode button, and let the device slave over air purification without needing any further input from you!
While it’d be nice to have the auto mode, air quality sensor, and perhaps Wi-Fi capability, lacking these features doesn’t hamper filtration performance at all. There’s one thing these two air cleaners do extremely well: capturing pet dander, dust, mold spores, pollen, and other allergy triggers.
Price Comparison
Not surprisingly, the MA-112 costs significantly more than the MA-40, and I explained why. But while the MA-112 comes in at a pretty steep price, it lacks the auto mode or Wi-Fi capability. Additionally, it doesn’t give you an air quality sensor. The more affordable MA-40 V2.0 doesn’t offer these features, too, which means neither option wins here.
Filters and Filter Replacement
With either device, you’ll enjoy medical grade filtration. HEPA filters are now pretty much the air filtration standard wherever ultra high air quality is required. You’ll often find HEPA filters in various applications such as cleanrooms in industries and research facilities as well as operation rooms in hospitals.
Admittedly, these air purifiers use pretty expensive air filters. In fact, these are some of the most expensive air purifier replacement filters I know, but that’s probably because they’re True HEPA H13 filters. Still, I’ve seen good enough air purifiers that use significantly cheaper replacement filters.
Compared to Levoit air purifiers, these may seem like the rich person’s replacement filters! They’re pricey filters and not necessarily the most long-lasting.
If the idea of buying expensive replacement air filters doesn’t excite you, buy something else. You could even go for an air cleaner that uses washable filters. Otherwise, you’ll end up dumping these fine air purification mechanisms in the basement!
Extremely Efficient Air Filters
The upside is that they’re extremely efficient air filters that go all out to make sure you keep breathing the cleanest air possible. About the effectiveness of the air filtration process of these filters, there seems to be very few complaints.
True HEPA H13 filters are capable of cleaning the air down to 0.1 microns, capturing 99.9 of the pollutants each pass. Meaning both the MA-40 and MA-112 are good PM2.5 particle removers.
Each unit features an easy-to-use 3-in-1 H13 True HEPA filter comprising a preliminary filter for filtering out larger particles, a medical grade filter that removes finer particles such as mold spores, dust, pollen, and more, and a smells-eating carbon filter.
The odor filter also does a good job reducing VOCs. This activated carbon filter banks on carbon pellets to eradicate toxic smells, smoke, formaldehyde, and other gaseous air pollutants.
Filter Longevity
According to Medify, the air filter for each unit should last about 3,000 hours if the machine runs 24 hours each day. That’s about 4 months, but if you choose to operate the machine for only 50% of the time (12 hours), you should get at least 6 months of usefulness. In the end, though, these filters (any filter actually) last as long as the impurities in your room or home permit. If the air quality is too bad, you’ll burn through filters dazzlingly fast. And if the air quality isn’t too polluted, the air filers should theoretically last longer.
Regular True HEPA Filters Vs True HEPA H13 Filters
Medify states that their H13 medical grade filters outperform regular True HEPA filters (which are typically H11 HEPA) as far as air purification. They claim that while H13 filters capture 99.9% of air particles at 0.3 microns in diameter, H11 HEPA filters aren’t as effective and let more air pollutants to pass through.
The company gets even more specific, stating that H11 HEPA filters won’t eliminate tobacco smoke, carbon dust, asbestos, bacteria, viruses, and more. According to Medify, H13 True HEPA filters capture all these air particles and a lot more.
But what do other air treatment authorities say? According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (The EPA), a True HEPA filter is technically any filter with enough air filtration efficiency to remove 99.97% of 0.3 micron air particles. The EPA adds that 0.3 microns are extremely hard to capture, and that larger or smaller particles are easier to filter.
In other words, a real True HEPA filter should provide you with adequate protection against allergens and other harmful particulates. Additionally, going by that very argument, regular True HEPA filters should be able to take out substantial amounts of PM2.5 particles as well as Pm10 particles.
I keep reading reviews that say that the MA-112 can remove tobacco smoke and wildfire smoke while the MA-40 can’t. But I refute that and say that both machines are good at removing PM2.5 air pollution since both use the much venerated True HEPA H13 filtration technology. It’s just that the MA-112 does the job much faster owing to its having two sets of air filters.
With either air purifier, you’ll breathe much easier, and you’ll have much less stuffy nose and watery eyes when spring shows up. Plus, you’ll wheeze much less, and you won’t need to blow your nose the whole time.
Power Consumption: Which Option Saves You Money?
These two air cleaning devices are efficient as far as electricity consumption since they boast the much sought-after Energy Star rating.
The MA-112 consumes as much as 95W while its kinder sibling the MA-40 has an efficiency rating of 54W. Evidently, the former guzzles almost twice as much energy as the latter.
If we assume you’ll run your air purifier 12 hours each day, how much electricity can you expect to use? The large, more powerful air purifier would draw roughly 416.10 kilowatt hours annually versus 236.52 kilowatt hours for the MA-40.
Owners of the MA-112 air purifier pay about $41.61 annually while those of the smaller product part with $23.65 a year to enjoy the raw air cleaning capability their unit offers.
Certifications
The MA-112 purifier and the MA-40 come with the requisite certifications as far as safety. Both offer the ETL certification from Intertek, which means they meet certain specific safety standards and should be safe to use without worry. They shouldn’t explode or something like that. By the way Intertek is a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory just like UL.
What’s more, each machine comes Energy Star rated. That means they draw much less power than a comparable air cleaner without the Energy Star certification.
Most important, both the MA-40 and MA-112 are CARB-certified. Neither excretes more than what’s considered a healthy level of harmful byproducts and substances/compounds into your indoor air.

boasted a lifetime warranty coverage, but every Medify purifier offers a lifetime warranty. I’m convinced no air purifier manufacturer would be willing to stand behind a faulty air cleaner for its entire lifespan.
You’ll need to register your purchase with the manufacturer to be eligible for the product lifespan warranty, and you MUST use original Medify replacement filters at all times, replacing them every 6 months.
Lots of competing air purifiers on the market today provide 1-2 year warranties.
Additionally, the customer has 30 days (money-back guarantee) to put the thing to work and if you feel you got a raw deal, return it. They pay for shipping, too, and that makes it a generous return policy. So, there’s no clear winner in this respect.
Medify MA-112 Vs Medify MA-40: Which Won?
Well, both the Medify MA-40 and Medify MA-112 are winners. I mean, both air purifying devices move an insane volume of air in a reasonably short amount of time.
When you introduce either into a room or space, pet dander, dust, pollen, mold spores, pet hair, and other allergens cower. These air pollutants go into panic mode, because they know their dominance is over. These devices capture almost every kind of air contaminant measuring 0.1 microns in diameter.
But they’re pricey air purifiers, and it gets worse — their replacement filters can have you saving longer for your retirement! Also, they’re big and powerful and might be overkill if used to purify small rooms. Also, both are ionizers, so note that down if you have asthma. Good thing is the ionizer is optional.
If you seek out a basement air purifier that actually works, grab the Medify MA-112. And if you’re looking to cleanse a smaller space with premium air cleaning power, areas such as living rooms, bedrooms, and offices, go for the smaller an cheaper MA-40 air purifier.
