Who Makes Levoit Air Purifiers?
Levoit air purifiers are designed and engineered by a company called Levoit. Headquartered in Orange County, Levoit became established as a brand quite recently (2017). That’s quite young, one would say. And doesn’t that make Levoit a fly-by-night company? Well, that’s a valid concern.
But consider this: Levoit manufactures more than just make air purifiers. Apart from these devices, the company also produces humidifiers, water filter pitchers, salt lamps, and even essential oils. In my opinion, the company comes across as a financially stable business. It seems like a company that’s in it for the long haul.
Levoit Air Purifiers: Design and Technology
According to Levoit, Levoit air purifiers are up to 40 percent more efficient than other air purifiers. Well, I really don’t know what to think about that claim. But I’d take it with a pinch of salt. I mean, have they tested all air purifiers on Earth and found them 40% less efficient? That seems unlikely to me.
But makers of devices and gadgets always strive to make it seem like they’re the best in the world. And that’s kinda understandable. So, I’ve elected not to count “tooting their horn” too loudly against them.
How Do Levoit Air Purifiers Work (Generally)?
Are Levoit’s air cleaning devices effective? Most of their room air cleaners feature a 360° design. The design has these machines draw in untreated air from all sides. Once the air gets sanitized, it shoots into the room via the top.
And that’s a huge plus. I mean, you won’t always need to place them in the middle of the space they’re purifying. It means you can just place them against a wall.
They use a powerful fan that leverages centrifugal force to suck in dirty air and push it out after filtration. These devices offer 3-stage air filtration. The first filter (the prefilter) removes particles that are sometimes big enough as to be visible. These include lint, dust, and smoke. The prefilter may also prolong the lifespan of the other two filters.
The second filtration level uses a True HEPA filter to rout a variety of particles. These particles include pollen, pet dander, pet hair, dust, dust mites, mold, and mold spores.
These machines also feature an activated carbon filter. Its main job is to remove —through adsorption — gaseous pollutants, odors, and VOCs.
Among Volatile Organic Compounds removed include benzene and formaldehyde. That’s why these air cleaners are some of the best air purifiers for exhaust fumes. They’re also great at dust removal, and that includes construction and silica dust.
What about filter replacement for Levoit air purifiers? It’s easy and fast, and air filters are available on Amazon.
With this in mind, we can dive in and interact a bit with our 3 Levoits. First off, I’ll present brief descriptions for each of these 3 devices. Afterward, I’ll stack them against one another so you can see which one would work best for you. I’ll try my best to focus on the similarities and differences between them so your knowledge will increase.
It’s designed for circulating the air in a room measuring 360 sq. ft. 4.5 times in 60 minutes. The Levoit LV-PUR131 brings together 3 fans speeds, a CFM of 135 and 3 filtration levels to do the job. It deals conclusively with gaseous pollutants, VOCs, and fine particles. Soot, mold spore, pet dander, pollen, cigarette/MJ smoke, benzene, and formaldehyde are among the polluting agents removed.
Also, it’s Energy Star rated (40W). So, your electric bills would stay within manageable limits.
The unit’s easy-to-operate control panel is ergonomically positioned for easy viewing of air quality reports and more. This Levoit has its control panel placed at the top.
You can program the device so it automatically shuts off after any number of hours between 1 and 12. Most of its alternatives allow you to select from only 3 timings, usually 1, 2, or 8/2, 4, or 8. So, this Levoit offers a bit more flexibility in that regard.
With this machine, you also get accurate, real-time room air quality reports. A sensitive air quality sensor monitors the air quality in the indoor environment continuously. The sensor automatically gives instructions to the fan, which then pushes the air quality number down to safe levels.
Made of durable ABS plastic, it weighs only 11 lbs. It’s therefore light enough, and moving it between rooms should be a breeze. It’s about 21″ tall, meaning it’s not bulky. Compare that to the Dyson TP04 whose height is 40+ inches, and you can see what I mean.
The unit also provides a nighttime mode so you can sleep peacefully at night. And it doesn’t produce ozone. You have nothing to worry about if you’re asthmatic or are sensitive to ozone. But it has no wheels — not that it needs them — and it’s not Wi-Fi enabled.
- Energy star rated
- Auto and night mode
- Light & portable
- Filters available
- Air quality sensor
- FCC and CE certified
- No ozone produced
- Sleek design
- Filter life display
- Quite on low
- Not Wi-Fi enabled
I like it that Levoit took steps to have the Levoit LV-PUR131 CARB-certified in 2017. That means California considers the device safe for use by its residents and everyone else. California enforces very stringent standards when it comes to products such as air purifiers, water purifiers, and more.
But I don’t like that the device doesn’t support Wi-Fi connection. Meaning you can’t use your phone to operate it. But then, you can always leave the machine on auto, and it’ll control itself. Plus, its auto shutoff timer kind of compensates for this shortcoming. I honestly don’t think that would be a dealbreaker.
A 12-month warranty extendable to 24 months.
Levoit LV-PUR131S (Smart, with Wi-Fi)
The Levoit LV-PUR131S functions and looks pretty much like the LV-PUR131. If you saw them stood side by side, you’d think you were looking at two LV-PUR131 purifiers. However, the former has slighter larger dimensions that the former. Plus, it’s a little heavier. While both have no wheels, they’re light enough and you can carry them easily.
But one main difference exists between these two air purifiers. It’s that the Levoit LV-PUR131S is Wi-Fi enabled. It allows users to control their unit remotely via phone. Maybe that’s why it costs about $20 more than the LV-PUR131, as of this writing.
With the Wi-Fi less option, you’d still be able to control your device when you’re away via its timer. Personally, I’d go for this option and save $20. Admittedly, though, being able to control an air purifier via a phone increases convenience.
Lest I forget, this air purifier removes precisely what the LV-PUR131 eliminates. Also, like its sibling, the LV-PUR131S offers a night mode and an advanced air quality sensor. It also offers the auto mode. One more thing. Connecting the LV-PUR131S to the VeSync app (available on Google Play or App Store) is pretty easy. It takes about a minute. I explain how in the following section.
How to Pair Your LV-PUR131S with Wi-Fi
Download the VeSync app from Google Play or App Store. Next, sign up for an account or continue without signing up. Signing up is better because it lets you save the info. Hitting “sign up” takes you to the next screen with a + sign.
At this point, tap the + sign to add your air purifier. Next, tap “Air Quality Products” and select your device: the Levoit LV-PUR131S. Then, press “Start Setup.”
Once you’ve done that, the Wi-Fi indicator light on your phone and on the device should start blinking. What if it won’t blink? Don’t worry. Instead, press and hold for 5 seconds the device’s power button. Then, tap “Next.” Next, proceed to choose the right frequency band or Wi-Fi network. Keep it 2.4 GHz. At this point, simply enter your Wi-Fi password.
Then, exit the app and head over to your Wi-Fi settings. Choose the Wi-Fi network that starts with the word VeSync followed by several numbers. Once connection completes, return to the app and continue with setup. This takes a minute or two at most. Finally, name your device. You’re done! It’s time to test whether the connection is working. So, try turning your air purifier off and then on. It’s working, right? Tell me in the comments, or contact Levoit directly. They respond promptly to requests for support
- Wi-Fi enabled
- Compatible with IFTTT and Alexa***
- Energy Star rated
- 1–12 hour auto shutoff timer
- FCC and CE certified
- No ozone generated
- Sleek, modern design
- Filter life indicator
- Quiet on low
- Filters easy to find
- Costs more than the LV-PUR131
- Misleading product description on Amazon
- A little larger and heavier than the LV-PUR131
But is the Levoit LV-PUR131S actually compatible with IFTTT, Google Assistant, and Alexa as the Amazon description says? Since very few air purifiers are IFTTT-compatible, I decided to engage Levoit on this claim. Guess what they said? The LV-PUR131S isn’t compatible with IFTTT.
Later on, the company emailed me saying the device is actually supposed to be compatible “with all these features!” I’m left wondering what to believe. But so far as I know, this advice doesn’t work with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. Nor is it compatible with IFTTT. The company promised to update me once their technicians “fix the bugs” making the device compatible with these capabilities.
I’ll keep pursuing them until they provide reliable info. Meanwhile, let’s assume these features, IFTTT, Google Assistant, and Alexa aren’t working in this machine. Or have bugs. Or whatever.
As you can see, it’s always best to get product info from reliable websites such as us, Dustfreerooms.com. With me, you’re always assured of 100% correct information. And if I ever make a small mistake (I’m human, you know), you can be sure I’ll soon rectify it. That’s because I keep checking my content for accuracy, updating it where necessary.
1 year. Extendable to 2 years.
Featuring a sleek, tower design, this Levoit cleans a larger area than either of its 2 siblings. The other two offer an air purification coverage of up to 360 square feet. By comparison, the Levoit LV-H134 does spaces as large as 710 square feet. Also, its CFM is considerably higher. It’s 312.
It uses 3 filters to do air filtration, just like the other two. Also, like them, this purifier helps eliminate cigarette smoke, mold, pollen, dust, odors, VOCs, and other gaseous pollutants.
Its design allows for dirty air to get sucked in from all sides as opposed to just two sides like the other two. That means this device won’t give you any trouble when it comes to finding a place to stand it. You don’t really need to put it in the center of the room.
Also, like the other two, the LV-H134 has 3 fan speeds. In addition, it offers a dimmer so you can crawl into bed and sleep like a baby. In addition, the LV-H134 comes with a 1-12 hour auto shutoff timer. There’s an air quality monitor that continuously reports on your room’s real-time air quality levels. A quick glance at the panel reveals your room’s current PM2.5 reading.
- Pleasing tower design
- Air pulled from all sides
- Higher CFM than its 2 siblings
- 5 counter
- Quiet on low
- Air quality sensor
- Timer (1–12 hours)
- Sleep mode and auto mode
- Can be wheeled around
- Energy Star rated
- Real-time air quality updates
- Replacement filters available
- Consumers slightly more power than the other two
- Considerably more expensive
- A bit loud on high
- Heavier and taller than the other two
- Not Wi-Fi enabled
While the LV-H134 is quite noisy on high, you normally won’t need to turn it on this mode. Unless you live in an area with very bad air and need to run it on high for some time.
But on high, it moves the air powerfully. It demonstrates considerably more air cleaning power than its two siblings. if you place your hand over either of the two air intakes, you’ll feel how hard it does the job.
And while it’s heavier than the other two, it comes with 4 wheels so you can move it with ease. Is the LV-H134 Wi-Fi enabled? No, it is not. And considering its price, I’d expect the machine to have this capability. However, the purifier does a great job cleaning the air.
I-year warranty. You can register with Levoit and extend the warranty by another 12 months. Be sure to do that within 2 weeks of buying the product.
What’s the Verdict?
Levoit LV-H134 vs Levoit Levoit LV-PUR131 Vs Levoit Smart (with WiFi + Alexa) LV-PUR131S, which is the best? In my opinion, all of them are great air purifiers. They work. All of them will make a noticeable difference in your indoor air quality.
But I feel no real difference exists between the LV-PUR131 and PUR131S. Quite understandably, the latter costs a little more than the former because it lets you connect to Wi-Fi. But If I had to choose between the two, I’d pick the Levoit LV-PUR131. Not because it’s better in terms of performance, though. I just like saving money. Do you?
Do you need to clean a rather large room, say 20″ x 30″ and are a Levoit fan? If yes, pick the Levoit LV-H134. Admittedly, it costs more, but it also offers more than its two siblings do. Also, it looks more appealing — at least it does to me. Also, the LV-PUR131 and PUR131S draw in air from only two sides. By comparison, the LV-H134 sucks in the air from all sides. Finally, the LV-H134 would offer considerably more purification power (CFM 312) for the same room size. Want to look at other comparable air purifiers? Go to Amazon now.
